Welcome to e-calib, a new web-based training and calibration tool for the evaluation of dental restorations.

e.-calib is intended for dentists and other clinically active research workers who need or want to evaluate dental restorations.

The clinical evaluation of restorations may be necessary and useful for quality purposes e.g. for the replacement decision of restorations that are placed by dentists in daily practice and – more often – for randomized clinical trials to evaluate restorative materials and/or operative techniques.

The evaluation includes 16 clinical and radiographic criteria which are based on aesthetic, functional and biological criteria.

Objectives of e-calib:

- To efficiently train and calibrate clinical dental research workers by using e-learning features.
- To reduce the variability of the outcome of clinical trials on dental restorations by standardized assessment criteria.
- To better compare the results of clinical trials on dental restorations.
- To render clinical calibration programs more efficient.

Note: e-calib does not replace the calibration of evaluation criteria for patients in a clinical setting!

Special criteria, such as the evaluation of proximal contact points, proximal excess of material, or the periodontal or mucosal response to restorations can only be practiced and calibrated on patients (see below for more details). Furthermore, for the verification of special clinical phenomena, such as marginal gaps, dental instruments like probes are necessary. However, if research workers use e-calib and train themselves, clinical calibration programs may be less time-consuming and more efficient.
e-calib will be expanded with time. Up to now, only clinical cases of Class I and Class II composite resin and ceramic inlays/onlays are included into the database. In the near future, also Class V and Class III/IV restorations will be selected and put into the database. Other materials, e.g. amalgam restorations will also be included as amalgam is replaced in many clinical trials on composite resins without applying standardized criteria for replacement. Furthermore, there are still randomized clinical trials which use amalgam as standard material.

Available Courses

Calibration examples for posterior fillings.
Questions on posterior fillings for a single criterion. Samples are selected per random. Currently, this also includes the exercise with all criteria (may be moved to another course in the future).
